A poster on Aplaceformom.com’s Q&A Forum, posed the following question to the experts:

How can I help Grandma cope with losing Grandpa?

My grandfather was the one who paid all the bills, house repairs and driving. Grandma has only ever taken care of domestic chores and raising children. Grandpa died a few months ago and she has no idea how to function without him. She is otherwise healthy and doesn’t need assistance with anything else. She is lost and I don’t know how to help?

Here is what I wrote:

My heart goes out to you and your Grandmother.

Clearly, this is a difficult time for you and your family and at these critical moments, it is easy to become overwhelmed.

My first piece of advice would be to take a step back and realize that you are not alone.

This will hopefully provide a small consolation to help you deal with your acute pain and personal loss, to know that others empathize with you.

We don’t live in a vacuum and I’m sure that your many family friends and loved ones are there to assist you in your time of need.

On a practical level and based upon the specificity of your question, here is what needs to be done asap:

Your Grandmother needs expert counseling. Look for a qualified psychotherapist who deals with loss and bereavement.
Your Grandmother needs to appoint and designate a POA to handle her affairs, clinically, financially, or perhaps even both.
Your Grandmother needs to be kept busy, stimulated and surrounded by love (and those whom she loves) as often and as frequently as possible. As a previous responder mentioned, do NOT allow her to isolate herself and withdraw from life, literally.
Get her involved with senior and community centers in her area and consider enrolling her in an Adult Day Care Center for daily activities and recreation.
Consider engaging with an Elder Attorney to discuss important issues related to Wills, Estates, Trusts and Advanced Directives.

CMS Proposes New Rules For Long Term and Post-Acute Care Centers

Washington—The Obama administration on Monday unveiled a new set of proposed regulations that would require the nation’s 15,000 long term and post-acute care centers to focus on what regulators are calling a “competence-based” approach to elder and rehabilitative care.

In an as-yet unpublished rulemaking notice, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) are asking for comment on rules that would require caregivers to asses their centers’ capabilities and their residents’ needs.

“Using the information from that assessment, facilities would be required to provide sufficient staff with the necessary competencies and skills to meet each resident’s needs based on acuity, diagnosis, and the resident’s person-centered comprehensive care plan,” the rulemaking notice states.

Most centers are already doing that kind of work, “at least informally,” but CMS officials say they want to “ensure” that the practice “is consistently performed and documented” in the nation’s care centers.

Merry Heart Health Care Center in Succasunna, NJ – Review

I recently had occasion to review the Merry Heart Health Care Center , located at 200 Route 10 West in Succasunna, New Jersey.

This nursing and rehabilitation center in Succasunna, offers numerous programs addressing different levels of care. It located in a very convenient location; close to shopping, restaurants and major thoroughfares. This facility opened in December, 2002. All 107 beds are Medicare and Medicaid certified. Residents are housed on three floors. The first floor contains a modern rehabilitation wing. Most short-term sub-acute patients are housed there. The second floor accommodates long-term residents and features “ Memory Lane,” a hallway of murals depicting scenes from the olden days in Succasunna. This floor is secured for the safety and protection of those residents with memory impairments. The third floor also houses long term residents. Residents gather for special events in the spacious first floor dining room.

Nearby in Dover, NJ, be sure to visit the Regency Grande Nursing and Post-acute Rehabilitation Center.

This magnificent and state of the art nursing and rehab center accept all forms of insurance.

Regency Grande’s team of experienced caregivers and support staff provides a variety of long- and short-term healthcare services designed to meet the widely varying and changing needs of our residents and patients, including the elderly, those suffering from prolonged illnesses or disabilities, as well as short-term rehabilitation candidates.

My Visits To Franciscan Oaks In Denville and Regency Grande In Dover NJ

There are some fantastic healthcare providers in Morris County.

Not too long ago, I had occasion to visit the Franciscan Oaks Skilled Nursing and Short Term Rehab Center located at 19 Pocono Road in Denville NJ.

In fact, Franciscan Oaks in located next door to Saint Clare’s Hospital in Denville, northern New Jersey’s premier provider of community-based healthcare and across the street are more than 50 physicians.

Just a stones throw from Denville NJ is Dover NJ, home to the magnificent Regency Grande Post-acute Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center!

I’ve had the privilege of visiting Regency Grande on many an occasion!

Monmouth County To Honor Centenarians

In celebration of older Americans Month in May, Monmouth County honors and commemorates Monmouth County residents reaching the hallmark age of 100.

Regency Park Post-Acute, Rehab and Nursing Center is proud to announce they will host for those residents of Monmouth County who will be 100 years old in 2015, or older, a celebration event. In partnership with Monmouth County Office on Aging, those “celebrity” residents are invited for a luncheon, music, gifts, a Monmouth County Proclamation for the Centenarians, and birthday cake. Monmouth County Freeholder, John Curley will be in attendance and presenting the guests of honor with proclamations commemorating their centenarian status.

The event will take place on Monday, May 11 at Noon at Regency Park, 3325 Highway 35, Hazlet, New Jersey.

Regency Gardens In Wayne NJ Receives Prestigious Award!

In the near future, we will be rolling out an exciting and fantastic new Scholarship Initiative (stay tuned!!).

At Regency Gardens Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wayne, NJ, we were recently awarded the 2014-2015 Business Partner Of The Year Award by the Passaic County Technical Institute!

The award recognizes Regency Gardens for our efforts in “offering work based learning opportunities” to their students, as well as serving on the school’s Advisory Board!

The Chief School Administrator, Diana C. Lobosco, said of Regency: “You are an integral component in fostering our students skill development, enabling them to compete in the global marketplace!”

My Visit To Roosevelt Care Center At Old Bridge, NJ

Late last night I paid a visit to the Roosevelt Care Center at Old Bridge, NJ.

This is a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center located at 1133 Marlboro Rd. Old Bridge NJ 08857.

I was there to meet with a family and a patient who will be transferring today to our magnificent Regency Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hazlet NJ.

Regency Park is located just a short drive from the Roosevelt Care Center and the family selected us for our world class 5 Star Rated Care.

Roosevelt Care Center is located near the intersection of Routes 9 and 18

The Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders began construction on the 105,000-square-foot center in 2009, and Roosevelt Care Center at Old Bridge officially opened its doors in the fall of 2011. The intent was to extend all of Roosevelt Care’s services to a more convenient location for South County families and residents.
