Wine and Cheese at Regency Park Postacute Center in Hazlet!

So we hosted a ‘Wine and Cheese’ party last night at Regency Park to introduce our new Administrator to our families.

Where I come from, I’ve got more of a personal affinity towards coffee and cake, but I guess wine and cheese is more Avant-garde so I was certainly game.

Turned out to be a beautiful and classy affair and I actually learned a few things too!

Did you know that a real wine aficionado never holds a glass of wine anywhere other than by the stem?

That’s right. Heaven forbid anyone to show their amateurish lack of sophistication by gripping a glass of wine like you would a cup of soda! You wouldn’t want to unduly influence the required temperature of the wine with the warmth of your fingers around the glass.

After all, the succulent aroma of the wine, coupled with the “hint of berries and birchwood (who the heck puts together these wood with wine references anyway; a lumberjack?!), along with the strong smooth finish” would be irrevocably altered by doing a dastardly thing such as this!

I learned the hard way last night.

In any event, now that I’ve become a true wine connoisseur, my life is much better! Lol!

Take a look at some pictures from last night’s event!

“Where’s Waldo?”

Regency Nursing Centers has a well deserved reputation for being particular about perfection(like the rhyme? I thought of it myself).

One of the things we are sticklers for, is that all Regency Employees be tagged with their readily visible Regency badges identifying them by name and job description. This is for the benefit of the families and residents so that they know who is who and feel like there is always somebody available to help them.

We don’t want any “Where is Waldo” moments.

My Regency Badge: A badge of honor!
My Regency Badge: A badge of honor!

Speaking of “Where is Waldo,” I’m sure all of you folks remember this iconic figure conjured up by llustrator Martin Handford and published in his beloved series of Where’s Waldo books over 25 years ago. The books challenge readers to find the titular cartoon man, clad in his trusty red-striped shirt and red-striped hat, as he hides in a landscape of red-striped red herrings.

"Where's Waldo?"
“Where’s Waldo?”

Well, would you believe that Ben Blatt writing for Slate magazine on November 18, figured out a whole complex system (replete with diagrams) to quickly find Waldo in any image! (I know what you’re thinking and I concur; Ben had far too much time on his hands!)

It’s actually pretty funny.

Nobody Quits at Regency

I’ve gone on record stating how much I love my job. Working at Regency Postacute Rehab and Skilled Nursing Centers is an incredible and enriching experience. I get to help people everyday and indelibly impact their lives in a most positive way.

There are far too many professions and lines of work espousing ethics and correctness, but instead display moral turpitude and engage in all manners of nefarious activities. Employees of such organizations will often placate themselves with rationale bordering on the inconceivable. I cannot, however, engage in a personal psychosis of revisionist reality, so I cannot work in such environments.

Regency affords me (and my colleagues) the opportunity to work for a high class, stellar Nursing Center and for a boss whose compassion for his patients and their families, is only rivaled by his passion to achieve excellence.

Oh…and my job is FAR from boring. In the admissions department where I work, there is always something afoot.

Actually, it is a well documented fact that Americans hate boring jobs.

I got a huge laugh out of the clever goodbye email a young woman just issued to her colleagues after quitting her position as Auditor at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

It is incredibly funny, yet foreign to me at the same time. Her email is the real thing, as this woman was subsequently interviewed here.

You might be asking yourself, what does an auditor do anyway? The letter writer answers this and many other important questions.

Here’s the entire email (with all names redacted):

Subject: Farewell and QUEEN BEY ALL DAY!

Hello XXXXXX Team,

After careful consideration, I will be ending my employment with PwC effective Monday, November 11th.

I’ve done two audit internships, one at Deloitte and one at PwC. I hated it then but I thought I’d give it a third try. Third time’s a charm right? GTFOH(If you don’t know what it means Google it!) Basically, my time here as an associate has confirmed everything I already knew ten times over. Auditing is a job for people who truly don’t have any other options and don’t know what else they could be doing. You work day in and day out pulling useless documentation and filling out useless workpapers that won’t really benefit anybody. All of it is BS! After asking dozens upon dozens of auditors what they think of their jobs and getting responses that include “I love my job!” or “I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” I realized just how fake auditors can be.

I strongly believe that auditors hate their lives and try to rationalize every piece of it. “Oh it’s just busy season” or “If everybody did the jobs they loved to do then there would be nobody doing the jobs that need to be done.” Measley excuses to justify pursuing a useless, meaningless career….

Here are some tips and pointers I thought I’d share for all of you to use through out life, you’ll need it. I also throw some tips in there that you can take back to the next XXXXXX Team Meeting or just any meeting where real people’s suggestions can be heard. Maybe a board meeting of some sort with some really important partners, because they’re so important right? (side eye)

I figure I would use the assistance of Twitter hashtags….y’all like those right?

  • Auditing is for the birds, get a real career that has meaning #dontbeFAKEaboutitbeABOUTit
  • Those coach and partner “relationships” or “meetings”….whatever you want to call them….Just stop. #thatishissoawkward #icantdeal #soforced #fakeconvosforfakeauditors #noidontwanttogazeintoyoureyesatatablefortwo #waytoointimateformytaste
  • Let’s keep it real, partners are treated as if they’re royalty. The reality is, THEY’RE NOT! They are average Joe’s like you and I, only their pockets are a little bigger. So, there is no need to wait at the partner’s feet acting like you’ll do any and everything to please them. For what? No need to come in early just to greet the partner on the job. No need to act like you’re such an overachiever by doing all of these unnecessary things. If you’re an overachiever, be a real one..not a phony. No need to wait until the partner leaves during busy season only to leave 20 minutes later. Your time is just as valuable, are the partners God? I don’t think so…#don’tbeasellout #thepartnerisgoinghometoeathisorherwarmsupper #whileyouarefakeauditng #weallknownooneisproductiveafterabout7pm #gohomeandcuddleupwithyourkids #ohandspousestoo #isntthatwhatthepartnersaredoing? #ohwellsIdigress

  • XXXXXX, you’re fake important and you stink. I’ve peeped your game…constantly trying to throw me under the bus. You talk too much about everyone and how much you’re so stressed out on all of your clients …everyday we suffer from hearing this ish as well as listening to your countless stories about your girlfriend. You’re such a gossiper that sometimes I think you’re more feminine then you appear. Who does that? You’re a grown man, get your life! #somethingtotakebacktomizzy #f*outtahere #yourlifesucksandyouclearlyknowit #somethingtotakebacktotheteam? #chattycathy #femininemuch?
  • P.s. XXXXXX, I can give two bleeps about your animals, maids, brother, etc. Is your life really that boring? • XXXXXX, I saw you yesterday giving me the side eye. I think those eyeballs need some readjusting. Girl, stop! Don’t play into XXXXXX’s episodes. Just because both of you feel the need to give your whole life story doesn’t mean other people will feel that way. Have your own opinions and ideas. #I’msorrybutnotsorry #dontbeafollower #thoseeyeballswerestaringtoohardforcomfort #goodluckonyourmiserablecrapofacareeratpwc #saygoodbyetoyoursociallife #butifyoudecidetoleaveyoucantwerkoutwiththerestofus #twerkmileymileytwerk
  • XXXXXX, where do I start? You hate yourself and your job, let’s be honest. Your cat doesn’t care about you so stop caring about it. Stories about your nasty cat are unbearable. Seriously, I can’t even deal. Beyond gross! You’re fake ratchet! I hear you giving weird remarks that are borderline weird….I can definitely hear the twang in your voice. Just be you! Most of all, these are the top 10 reasons Baddie Bey(Beyonce) will kill Britney Spears (she’s a has been) any day.
  1. Beyonce can sing and dance live without lip singing and do it well. She doesn’t need autotune or a background track to make her the Queen. All she needs is a mic, some heels, and her fabulous Brazilian and Malaysian wig to swing around. Can’t say the same for Britt. Sorry girl!
  2. Beyonce has much more class.
  3. Beyonce’s music transcends culture. Britt….uh….well, that stopped a few world tours ago.
  4. Beyonce has continued to get better and better over time. Her vocals are stronger than ever. Not to mention, after popping out Baby Blue she was back at it. She didn’t get all washed up and boring like Britt did.
  5. Beyonce is on some presidential ish. Didn’t you watch President Obama and First Lady Michelle’s first dance? Or the inauguration performance? Haven’t you kept up with the Let’s Move campaign (Bey and First Lady Michelle’s initiative to solve the epidemic of childhood obesity? ) Well, Bey has been on! Britt has stayed in the shadows. #sorrybutnotsorry #getyourlife
  6. Beyonce killed the Superbowl half time show solo dolo. Britt and NSYNC did that back in the 90s…but that was the 90s…and she wasn’t solo dolo…so Bey wins!
  7. Beyonce can dance her butt off. She has rythym. Britt used to be able to …but she is stiff now. I’m sorry..
  8. Beyonce has stage presence. I don’t think you know what that is but you can Google it. It’s basically something Britt doesn’t have.
  9. Beyonce is the QUEEN. She is the best performer alive. Bottom line, no gimmicks!

10. Beyonce wins and now that I’m out of here, I win too!!! #doingtheharlemshakeasitype

The Regency Nursing Touch!!!

So Tzvi Gross sent me these two photos late last night. He was so taken by the clever marketing of this company (and I agree).

He tells me this:

My wife bought something from piperlime.com (owned by Gap) and with the purchase they sent this card!! Thought you’d love it!

(Tzvi is awesome. He’s got more creativity than most people I know, so he appreciates creativity as well)

Check the card that came with his Wife’s stuff and click to enlarge if you must!

I Had a “Huh” Moment Today!

I toured with a family today and we had a candid discussion about the “rehab facility” where Mom is currently and where I will soon be releasing her from with her family’s eternal gratitude.

In recounting Mom’s nightmare experience at this other “rehab center”, they told me about a specific and most egregious issue.

Now I try very hard not to solicit feedback for other facilities and/or to interject with my commentary when families pro-actively decide to vent to me about their prior experiences.

I simply reassure them that at Regency Mom will be able to thrive as she deserves in the most caring and compassionate environment possible.

Today, however, when I heard this specific complaint recounted by the family, my knee jerk reaction was very quick. My jaw dropped and I uttered one disbelieving word; “HUH!?”

The family looked at me and responded with 3 words; “yes, we know.”

Actually, between our 4 shared words we had an entire conversation!

These 4 words were replete with unspoken questions, untold aggravation, total disbelief, sad confirmation and my unspoken commitment to be better and do better – because WE ARE BETTER AT REGENCY. MUCH BETTER!

You see, my friends, “HUH” is a universal term that means the same thing in every language.

In fact, it is amazing how the dynamics of human conversation gave shape to a word that knows no boundaries.

Read all about it by clicking on the link below, it will make you smile for sure.

Long-term care-related comedy to air on HBO

Following in the footsteps of the Netflix on-demand show “Derek,” which became available in September, cable network HBO will debut a six-episode long-term care-related show Nov. 24.

“Getting On” will chronicle the lives of a “ragtag crew” caring for elderly women at a California hospital’s extended care unit “while dealing with the challenges of a healthcare bureaucracy in need of an overhaul.” Also similar to “Derek,” which premiered on British television, the HBO show is based on a BBC series of the same name.

The U.S. show, promoted as “blending outrageous humor with unexpected moments of tenderness,” will star “Roseanne” veteran Laurie Metcalf, Niecy Nash of “Reno 911!” Mel Rodriguez of “Community” and Alex Borstein, voice of Lois Griffin on “Family Guy,” among others. It will air 10 to 10:30 p.m. ET/PT.

HBO’s website has preview clips.

Mr. Gross Gets His Flu Shot!

Mr. Gross before the shot, making a silly face!

Whoever said that owners of skilled nursing and postacute facilities “never involve themselves in the day to day activities” of their centers, never met our beloved Mr. David Gross.

Here he is just this week getting his free flu shot together with his staff at one of his Regency facilities (and he waited in line like everyone else – his idea !)

Taking “true ownership” has meanings on multiple levels.

Mr. Gross is a true owner and that’s why we respect him so much!

Elvis Is Here All The Time! – Regency Nursing Centers

I had to be in my old hometown late last night. I figured I would pay a visit to my Brother in Law, who is a prolific music composer, arranger and singer.

He just built himself a brand new state of the art recording studio in his basement and he is quite proud of it. The cumulative worth of his equipment is valued at above $100,000 dollars and he has many recording artists booking time to record at his place. He wanted me to come take a look since I was in the area.

Being somewhat of a music buff myself, I decided to humor him and see what all the fuss is about.

Wow!

He’s got a very cool setup!

With my Brother in Law in his futuristic music studio!

So we were talking about music and he was showing me what the different dials on the big console were for. Then he turns to me and says; “see how I manipulate this sound effect using this knob? Well Elvis was able to do that purely with his own voice, it’s a shame he’s gone!”

I responded and said whatever are you talking about!?

Elvis isn’t gone at all!

Heck, I see him performing at Regency Postacute Rehab Centers all of the time! In fact, from all of the various performers who come by to give concerts (and there are many), Elvis is most beloved by our patients and their families!

I’ll never forget how enamored my children were when they came to visit Regency Park in Hazlet for a day of festivities with our families and were treated to a splendid Elvis concert! They couldn’t get over it!

A few days later, I had to get something from down in the basement. So I go downstairs and see my little 6 year old gyrating with a makeshift guitar (the broomstick was a sorry excuse for a guitar, but quite creative for a 6 year old) to some music. I took a look at him and said Ben, that’s some great stuff you’re playing there, but what’s the deal with your shirt unbuttoned halfway down?

He looks at me like I’m the crazy one and exclaims, “I’m just like the singer from your work!”

“Singer from my work?”

Took me a minute to realize that he was referring to ELVIS!!

Just hope he doesn’t do that in School!!!

No, friends, I can assure you, Elvis is very much alive at the Regency Nursing and Rehab Facilities across the Sate of New Jersey.

Ask our happy patients and residents (and ask my little Ben…just not in front of his Mother please!)

Regency Nursing Enjoys the Holiday Spirit!

Tonight is the traditional “mischief night” for those who engage in mischief.

Not sure what everyone will get carried away with, but i encourage you to please be safe.

At Regency Nursing and Post Acute Rehab Centers, we have already been enjoying the festive holiday spirit for several weeks now (without the mischief).

Our facilities are bedecked with Halloween ornaments in every nook and cranny!

I just captured these photos for you to look at!

Not too scary lobby at Regency Park!
Not too scary lobby at Regency Park!

However, it seems there are those who are engaged in their own form of mischief, perhaps not in the traditional sense, but with a similar idea to elicit pure shock value.

The Google people (they never disappoint) just placed their latest billboard in the iconic location of 42nd and 8th avenue in New York City’s Time Square.

This full building billboard actually covers two connecting buildings located right off the corner of this busy intersection.

The Port Authority Bus Terminal is located right on the adjacent corner and occupies an entire city block. I used to exit Port Authority right in front of this signage every single day on my way into work.

Not sure if this latest billboard was done in the spirit of Halloween, but it certainly is a full frontal assault on the senses (I guess that’s the point, right).

Take a look and click on the image to enlarge.

These two folks have been standing guard outside the admissions office for 2 weeks now, scaring away my families! Lol!
