New Humanoid Robot Unveiled at The Royal Children’s Hospital

In a world-first trial, a humanoid robot will be helping young patient’s recover from various illnesses and injuries at The Royal Children’s Hospital.

The robot called NAO is being trialled on children with conditions ranging from brain and spinal cord injuries to cerebral palsy.

Experts from Swinburne University worked closely with rehabilitation therapist from the hospital to program the robot to deliver tailored rehabilitation programs to each patient.

The trial has been made possible due to funds from the Transport Accident Commission.

“It’s terrific to see Victorian organisations working together on initiatives like this pilot to create a brighter future for young people with spinal and acquired brain injuries”, said Minister for Health Jill Hennessy.

About 5000 people Victoria are hospitalised as a result of transport accidents each year.
