No Worries, Charlie Is Here!

charlie

The game is simple, designed for a child and intended to teach users about diet and diabetes. I sit opposite Charlie, my diminutive fellow player. Between us is a touch screen. Our task is to identify which of a dozen various foodstuffs are high or low in carbohydrate. By dragging their images we can sort them into the appropriate groups.

Charlie is polite, rising to greet me when I join him at the table. We proceed, taking turns, congratulating each other when we make a right choice, and murmuring conciliatory comments when we don’t. It goes well. I’m beginning to take to Charlie.

But Charlie is a robot, a two-foot-tall electromechanical machine, a glorified computer. It may move, it may speak, but it is what it is: a machine that happens to look humanoid. How can I ‘take’ to it?

The State Of Matter, Actually Matters.

state of matterScientists have theorized for decades that an additional state of matter exists, but despite tantalizing hints to its presence, details about this mystery state have remained elusive—until now.

A new paper in Nature Materials by researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Cambridge details how physicists were finally able to catch a glimpse of the predicted quantum spin liquid, and the strange fermions that accompany it.

So, how did they do it—and just what is quantum spin liquid? Quantum spin liquid is a phase where electrons actually fracture apart—and begin to behave very strangely. As Gizmodo previously reported.

If this doesn’t interest you, no worries; you still matter too!

New Insights From Neuroscience; I Miss You Gus!!

New insights from neuroscience — aided by a small zoo’s worth of dancing animals — are revealing the biological origins of rhythm.

Ferris Jabr writing for Quanta Magazine yesterday, put together a fascinating read (at least to me, it is) re: the above. Read the article here.

I must admit that when I read the article, it brought back a flood of fond and warm memories of ‘my’ beloved Gus (and yes, I did feel as though her were mine)!

I wrote a lengthy ode to Gus back in August of 2013.

Please click on this link to read my article and let it be a tribute to his everlasting memory!

Dear Gus shall not be forgotten and lives on in our hearts and minds (especially my Children)!

On Artificial Hearts, My Running and My Cousin’s Engagement.

Did you ever experience waking up with a certain enthusiasm and multitudinous thoughts passing through your mind like an unabated torrent of consciousness, as opposed to the proverbial “stream of consciousness?”

Well, that’s how I feel this morning.

My mind is a spinning vortex of  thoughts and the daily routine is lost in the blaring cacophony and dissonance of more powerful ideas.

If this somewhat disjointed blog reflects that, now you know why!

You know, replacing the heart might not seem the most daunting challenge. All it does is pump blood, and humans have built pumps for thousands of years. But to describe the heart as merely a pump is like saying all the cellist Yo-Yo Ma does is drag horsehair across wires.

Clyde Haberman, writing in the yesterday’s edition of the New York Times, posits that the artificial heart is finally good medicine again. Quite an interesting read, over here.

In other news, I’m finally back to running after my recent bout with Achilles Tendinitis!

Of course, I cannot ramp back up to my typical 35 miles per week average during the spring and need to do this very slowly, lest I reinjure my Achilles. So I think I’ll start with about 10-15 miles per week, with my longer runs reserved for Sunday.

Yesterday, I went out for a 6 mile run in the early morning chill. I didn’t run on all flats and actually did a few hill repeats. It felt really good to get back out and my average was a decent 8 minutes and 30 seconds per mile. I’ll take it.

Did you know that the real Forrest Gump is actually somewhat of a running legend in Miami Beach, Florida!

They call him “The Raven.” Fascinating guy with a very cool story (read it here)

Finally, my cousin got engaged this week.

I was floored when I found out where he met his bride.

They actually met in the waiting room of an organization that facilitates and matches kidney donors to needy transplant patients.

Both of them are kidney donors!

Now you know the rest of the story!

Go take on the day!

Regency Park Welcomes Jonah!

IMG_1633

We welcomed Jonah, our new ruby red beta fish into our Regency Family the other day.

Aptly named by our beloved Founder, Mr. David Gross, who happened to be in the office at the time of the naming “ceremony” and offered Jonah as an ode to the exploits of the Biblical Jonah who had prior experience with a whale and water.
